A Taste of Two Cities: Food + History Walking Tour through St. Louis Past + Present
Description
Join a native historian & raconteur on this leisurely two-mile walk through St. Louis' fabulous Central West End while nibbling delectable and uniquely St. Louis treats from St. Louis' most chic and popular neighborhood. On this tour, you'll hear the good, bad, and ugly* history that created the city you see today, while sampling 4-6 iconic St. Louis eats + all the Dad jokes you can stomach at no extra charge.
St. Louis was the fourth largest city in the US and brimming with Gilded Age wealth when the globally significant 1904 World's Fair happened right next door. You'll see grand mansions that have hosted royalty while also discussing the origins of the nearby Delmar Divide - a socioeconomic consequence of self-inflicted wounds that continue to bleed to this day within view of the artifacts of opulent wealth.
You'll get the sordid history of grand hotels, see mansions of brewing heirs, where a future president once toddled around and where the "Spirit of St. Louis" came from. We'll walk in the footsteps of royalty and frontiersmen alike around this well preserved neighborhood where authors and poets and robber barons all once hung their hats.
Did you know St. Louis has its own pizza style unlike any other - including a cheese only found here? You don't "know" St. Louis until you've tried the only-found-here favorites of generations - and you don't know the CWE until you taste some of the "IYKYK" eats that locals have come back to for decades.
Located at the eastern edge of Forest Park and just 5 minutes from Downtown, the Central West End ("CWE") is the most vibrant of St. Louis's 79 neighborhoods and the only one listed among the "Great Places of America". In the late 19th century, the CWE was the epicenter of Gilded Age wealth in America's fourth largest city and de facto capital of America's westward expansion - culminating in a World's Fair in 1904 that we still won't shut up about.
*TRIGGER WARNING: historical events regarding race and social justice are covered.
