Rano Kau Volcano: Trek Around the Crater Rim

Description

Description

Experience the dramatic and awe-inspiring landscape of Rano Kau, one of Easter Island’s three extinct volcanoes. With a crater spanning over 1.5 kilometers, this natural wonder houses a freshwater lagoon dotted with reed islands and surrounded by native flora. It is believed that the ancient manavai system—circular stone-protected cultivation pits—was inspired by volcanic craters like Rano Kau. Historically, the lagoon served as an essential water source for the Rapa Nui people.

Continue your journey to Orongo Ceremonial Village, perched on the cliffside of Rano Kau. This sacred site features 48 stone houses built in an elliptical shape and overlooks the Motus, three small islets once central to the Tangata Manu (Birdman) competition. The site is adorned with petroglyphs depicting birdmen and deities, adding depth to the archaeological significance of the area.

As you walk through this historic space, you'll be surrounded by a landscape where the sea and sky converge in a vast elliptical horizon, offering a visual reminder of the island’s isolation and mystique.
