Pure Bali Village Experience & Cooking - Jamu Class - VIP Transfer
Description
A Journey Through the Flavours and Traditions of Bali
Experience authentic Balinese life and cuisine in a setting surrounded by lush rice terraces and tropical greenery near the majestic Mt. Batukaru. Your adventure begins with a scenic drive through the countryside, and it's always time for a photo stop, whenever you like.
Upon arrival in the small mountain village, enjoy a leisurely walk along the beautiful rice terraces. Your local guide will introduce you to the many exotic plants, herbs, and fruits that flourish here. With a bit of luck, you’ll see a farmer ploughing the fields with his water buffalo—just as generations before him have done.
A warm welcome by our Balikaru family. The experience begins with a short introduction to traditional Balinese music, as you try playing the Rindik, a bamboo instrument whose soft tones echo across the village. Then, follow your guide through the Balikaru herb and spice garden, where you’ll discover the plants that give Balinese dishes their distinctive aromas—and learn how they’re also used in traditional medicine.
Next, it’s time to dive into the world of Jamu, Indonesia’s ancient herbal elixir. Under gentle guidance, you’ll prepare two different types of Jamu using age-old family recipes and traditional utensils. Taste your creations and learn about their role in daily Balinese life as natural health tonics.
It's time to move to our Paon Bali, the open-air kitchen where your culinary journey continues. Under the watchful eye of our Balikaru chef, you’ll chop, grind, and stir your way through a series of authentic dishes—each one bursting with local flavors and fragrant spices. You will have a lot of fun together, especially at the live bamboo grill station when preparing Sate Lilit. You also learn how to make Lak Lak—the yummy dessert—by using a traditional clay pot. Here are the examples of what you will cook:
- Beras Kencur: Indonesian spice & herb drink
- Jamu Kunyit Jahe Asam: Turmeric-Ginger-Tamarind juice
- Base Genap: Balinese spice paste
- Sambal Mbe & Sambal Matah: Traditional Balinese chili condiments
- Tum Ayam: Chicken with herbs, steamed in banana leaves
- Sate Lilit Chicken: Minced chicken satay, grilled at traditional Gerobak
- Tempeh Kecang: Crispy tempeh in sweet soy sauce
- Sayur Urap: Mixed vegetables with coconut and herb paste
- Sayur Paku: Balinese fern dish
- Traditional Balinese desserts: Lak Lak or other surprises
Finally, enjoy the feast you’ve prepared—a delicious, home-cooked Balinese lunch served in our peaceful Warung Balikaru.
After lunch another truly local experience awaits you: join the farmer in planting rice and get a feel for this essential part of Balinese culture. Visit the small Balikaru farm to meet the animals, like ducks, geese, and our friendly cow, Manis. She is happy for a change, and you are welcome to feed her. Discover the fascinating world of the stingless Trigona bees, whose honey is prized for its health benefits.
Your experience concludes with a gentle village walk downhill, framed by breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Meet the friendly locals, learn about Balinese architecture and traditional feng shui, and finally arrive at the holy Belulang Hot Spring, where your driver awaits to take you back to your hotel.
Before you leave, capture the moment with a photo together with the Balikaru family—a perfect memory to accompany your cooking class certificate and recipe collection, which we’ll send to you after your visit.
